Superfoods are renowned for their high nutritional values and health benefits. All different types of food have particular health benefits and are packed with various nutrients, however superfoods are described in such a way because they are particularly rich in a certain nutrient.

Knowing what foods are high in certain nutrients such as vitamins and minerals can be extremely beneficial to your health when incorporated into the diet. A good range of different foods is always importent to have in the a healthy balanced diet. Adding super foods to a balanced could improve our health and boost the immune system, helping to protect us from diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

Cacao

Cacao is where chocolate derives from. Available in many forms such as raw cacao, cacao beans, cacao powder. In its natural state cacao is high in antoxidants, calcium, B Vitamins and iron and is known for its healing and aphrodisiac qualities. Certain dark chocolate products can be high in cacaoa yet don’t have the high fat and sugar content of milk chocolate.

If purchasing organic cacao on the internet or high street it is important to ensure the product is organically certified by a certifying body such as the Organic farmers & growers (OF&G) or soil association for example. There are many inferior cacao products on the market that are less dense in nutritious value and poorly produced that need to be watched out for.

Quinoa

Quinoa is known as a whole grain but is actually a seed. Quinoa is extremely rich in protein and contains good levels of calcium, magnesium, B Vitamins, iron and some essential fats. Can be used in salads as an excellent alternative to rice or potatoes.

Acai Berrys

Acai berrys are found in the amazon rain forest and are very popular in smoothies but can also be purchased as a juice known as Acai juice.

Acai berries are said to be high in a group of antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are linked to heart health benefits. Acai is also known to have a good source of protein, fibre and omega 6 fatty acids which has been shown to help improve brain function.
